Run comes to an end
Ponteland made one enforced change from the cup victory at Wark last Saturday with Gavin Wood replacing the suspended Liam McIvor. The game got underway on a dark dismal and wet afternoon at the Leisure Centre and it was Wood who made his presence known after ten minutes when he collected a clever back heel from Holden and saw his left foot drive cannon off the post back into the arms of visiting keeper Adnitt.
Stocksfield were looking strong and organised at the back with Keenan and Finnerty willing runners upfront. They were awarded a penalty after 20 minutes when Anzevui in a determined and successful attempt to win the ball was adjudged to have made a dangerous lunging tackle by referee Hulme. Wayne Stewart confidently fired past Havelock to put them in front. On the stroke of half time Stewart got his second heading in unmarked at the near post from a corner by Dowson.
Brown replaced the injured Hodgson for the second half and put in a good cross which was cleverly pulled down by Wood but his left foot shot went wide of the target. Wood later played the ball into the path of Anzevui but his effort lacked direction. The visitors were determined to hold onto their lead with the well organised defence limiting Pont to very few chances. When they did get opportunities Pont's shooting lacked accuracy and power. From a long goal punt Stewart got behind Pont's defence but his attempted lob dropped well over the bar.
Kent came on for the hardworking Dawson to provide some fresh legs and should have pulled one back for Pont with perhaps the best chance of the game latching onto a through ball from Turner but he shot wide of the advancing keeper and the goal. Turner was looking more dangerous as the game went on linking up well with Kent and Holden but in fairness Pont rarely threatened the Stocksfield goal and the Tynedale lads held on comfortably for the three points.
Although often subject to criticism the performance of referee Dean Hulme was excellent. He was always up with play, must have covered every inch of the pitch and his man management skills ensured he was always in control despite the difficult and tiring weather conditions.
Final Score Ponteland United 0 Stocksfield 2
