Ponteland win despite injuries
A wholehearted, determined performance from Ponteland earned them a deserved three points against local neighbours Heddon at Bullocksteads.
Heddon brought early pressure on the visitors defence with a series of corners but Phillips and Brown defended resolutely. Pont's first opportunity was after 15 minutes when Davidson's cross was headed goalwards by Holden but Curran pulled off a finger tip save to push the ball over the bar.
David Edwardson for the hosts created a good chance for Heddon when he chipped a ball over the defence for Craig Horsfall who controlled the ball well but his shot was brilliantly saved by Havelock.
Ponteland suffered a double blow when Gate had to leave the field with a head injury and shortly afterwards Shiels had to be replaced suffering ligament damage. They were replaced by Fenwick and Glenn Ford. Five minutes before half time Holden was brought down in the box when he beat the keeper to the ball and Wood stepped up to calmly fire home. Half time Heddon 0 Pont 1.
Shortly into the second half, Fenwick who had done well since coming on gallantly chased down a defender but damaged his ankle. Former Heddon player Max Turner replaced Fenwick.
Despite losing three players through injury Ponteland showed a spirit not seen this season with every player being determined to retain their lead if not increase it. Holden played Kent through but he was brought down some 30 yards from goal and then Holden was put through by Davidson but his effort lacked direction.
Heddon's best chance in the second half fell to McElroy but Havelock saved well and stout defending by Ford, Phillips and Brown cleared a resultant melee. Final score Heddon 0 Ponteland 1.
This was a good all-round performance by Ponteland with every single player showing spirit and commitment throughout the 90 minutes.
