County reassurance over recycling

Posted by Graeme Whitfield on Sep 9, 08 04:50 PM in Councils

People living in Northumberland have been reassured that the material they recycle is being handled in the greenest possible way.

Northumberland County Council hopes to ease concerns raised by a recent TV programme which suggested that some local authorities were uncertain about the final destination of recycled goods.

Northumberland County Council's head of waste management, Paul Jones, said: "I am absolutely confident about the contracts and arrangements that the county council and its recycling and waste management partner SITA UK have in place.

"I would like to reassure everyone in the county that their efforts are appreciated and worthwhile."

Richard Hinchcliffe, from SITA UK, said: "It would simply not be in anyone's interest to undermine the public's confidence in the system, so we always act with total professionalism in these matters."
